AERIAL DANCE TRAPEZE

Aerial Dance Trapeze – Explorer/Improver

Week 1
4.15pm – 5.45am – Tutor Laila Umeko
Space F, chandelier 2 (free standing rig)

This class is open to all aerial lovers, but more specifically to newer movers & trapezists who would like to get to know this apparatus. We’re going to touch on two main areas during the week: trapeze technique and creative research.

The technical part will be about getting comfortable with the foundations of trapezing. We’ll be building on the bases throughout each class, with a focus on finding freedom within each figure and pathway of movement. Every body is unique, I’ll be looking to help you establish training habits which are suited your individual physical capacities and interests.

For the creative part I’ll be bringing you some dreamy aerial choreography and a few of my favourite physical research tools. Together we’ll experiment with different pathways and movement qualities, using the trapeze as a support, a partner and a friend. I’m always telling people that trapeze is the apparatus for lazy aerialists… Ideally, you’ve spent some time hanging upside down before, but don’t worry too much about being extra
full of muscle… there’ll be lots sitting, standing & lying around (only difference to everyday life is that we’ll be in those positions without needing to touch the ground!)

Bring extra layers to protect your precious skin (especially waist, armpits & elbows)

Week 2
2.30pm – 4pm – Tutor Tess Munro Pedreros
Space F, chandelier 2 (free standing rig)

This class is open to movers and aerialists who want to learn to dance with a trapeze.
We will begin by getting comfortable on the bar and in the ropes with basic technique and a focus on approaching aerials with creativity and safety in mind. We’ll work through sequences that are simple but full of potential for creative expression.

Participants will be encouraged to play with the material, through guided improvisation, to create their own unique interpretations. We will celebrate all the weird and wonderful ways the sequences can be personalised. The class will introduce participants to spinning technique and how to use the spin to guide your movement..

You should be able to hold yourself with supportive abdominals in suspension off of a bar with engaged shoulders for 10 seconds. Spending time before the festival on bar apparatus will also be useful in order to prepare your hands for trapeze classes.

Please bring protective clothing (long sleeve shirts, layers, trousers that cover the knees, ankle protection if desired).

Aerial Dance Trapeze – Skilled/Advanced

Week 1
2.30pm – 4pm – Tutor Laila Umeko
Space F, chandelier 2 (free standing rig)

This class is for aerialists who are already comfortable in the air. We’ll be getting down n dirty with dynamic technique, choreography and creative research. This class is all about finding your style – and maybe also learning some shiny new tricks to show your friends 😉

The technical part will be focused on finding fluidity in dynamics, I’m all about making the trapeze life easy and relaxing (as far as it can be anyway!). We’ll be working on cleaning up the basics as well as integrating new material into the things that you’re already more comfortable with.

I’ll also be bringing you some of my favourite flows & dreamy dance sequences. We’ll be using these as a foundation for you to develop your own means of existing in the air. I love finding new ways of moving in, on & around my trapeze… I’m hoping to inspire you to find yours. The possibilities are endless! Let’s make some trapeze magic <3

Inverts are a must for this class. The rest we can figure out along the way.

Week 2
4.15pm – 5.45am – Tutor Tess Munro Pederos
Space F, chandelier 2 (free standing rig)

This class is open to artists who are familiar with and fond of trapeze.
In this class we will use the ropes of the dance trapeze to weave ourselves through tangled, twisting pathways and surprising sequences.

Participants will be encouraged to embellish the material, through guided improvisational prompts, to create their own unique interpretations. Incorporating spinning technique and developing fluid transitions from and to the floor, we will explore the connection between ground and air, creating satisfying trapeze interactions.

Participants should be comfortable inverting above the bar and confident in their stamina in longer sequences. Experience in spinning is not necessary, however it’s helpful to have some spin tolerance prior.

Please bring protective clothing (long sleeve shirts, layers, trousers that cover the knees, ankle protection if desired).
